Molyvos features the most extensive selection of Greek wines available in the United States, boasting more than 400 wines that represent more than 50 wineries in Greece, leading to its reputation as one of the best in New York City. Wine Director Kamal Kouiri was hired to lead Molyvos’s wine program 10 years ago, taking the initial list from 12 wines by the glass and 160 bottles from around the world to the award-winning offering it is today. “We’re giving our guests the whole Greek experience by transporting them to a Greek destination through food and wine. We represent the best variety of grapes growing in the regions of Greece and offer wines that are a natural fit for Greek cuisine.”
The comprehensive wine list at Molyvos includes 60 wines by the glass. “Our wine list is dotingly expanded with approachability, value, and quality always in mind,” says Kouiri, who regularly visits Greece to try out new vintages before they are released to the U.S. market. While special attention is paid to showcasing hand-crafted Greek wines, Kouiri also seek boutique as well as uncommon varietals from classic and emerging wine regions of Greece. His close relationships with importers and winemakers means the restaurant is able to offer rare wines, many of which are exclusively available at Molyvos.
Molyvos is also known for its collection of ouzo, Greece’s national anise-flavored aperitif. “Our ouzo list has a very important role in the beverage program, like grappa for Italian restaurants or port wines for steakhouses,” Kouiri says. The restaurant currently offers 14 different ouzos, and includes refreshing ouzo-based cocktails including the flavorful Lesvos Lemonada.
In addition, Mediterranean-themed cocktails are also available, often utilized surprising and refreshing combinations of ingredients, as evidenced by offerings such as the Fig Martini, which adds Elderflower liqueur, Cointreau, and Fig purée to the classic vodka version. A wide selection of Greek and Mediterranean beers is also available—including Mythos and Alpha from Greece, Efes Pilsner from Turkey, and Keo from Cyprus—alongside American microbrews.
